is happening that notice many people have been watching this. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, scenitists are not sure why this is happening. >> still largely intact, this humboldt squid may have become stranded here on hidden beach in aptos within the past 24 hours. it's one of hundreds, if not thousands of squid to be found on beaches from rio del mar to pleasure point. why it's happening is not clear. research biologist john field suspects the squid are simply losing their way. >> it looks like the squid at times to do not realize that the ocean will end. sometimes they are swimming in a shallow water and they seem to be healthy but they are stranded and die. there could be just a small fraction of the population that is still in that. it could be a reflection that there are abundant squid in coastal waters. >> makin grew to nearly 100 lbs.. most of these are one- 2 ft.. this could be at least 3 ft. long. another theory is that toxins in algae or the so-called 'red tide' may cause the squid to lose their sense of direction. while still rare, squid-strandings are on the incr

, and mop mud-with rob fladeboe has the rest of that story. >> as much as fifteen inches of rain in parts of the santa cruz mountains overt the past five days has taken a toll on the narrow, winding roads here. vine hill road in scotts valley is now closed indefinitely after a large musdlisde took lane. >> it is a big commute route from highway 17 from the press lower road. we do have one lane completely washed out and a portion broken off. we are trying to assess the situation. >> of crews are also working on several mostly minor mudslides that sent rocks and debris onto highway 17. there is a lot of this too, a lot of standing water as a result of backed up storm drains. road closures and unstable hillsides have many residents looking for detours. >> it is about 5 mi. down the road. and then about another 4 mi. back up the road. it is an extra 10 minutes or so to get to scotts valley. >> and power outages linger as amid downed trees and power lines. this crew worked through the night to restore electricity to a couple of dozen homes here on laurel glen drive. in the santa cruz moun

a gun from the backyard of a nearby home. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, the suspects were then trailed by police to another nearby residence where a brief standoff >> one of at least two armed robbery suspects could be seen being taken into custody by police early friday near the intersection of mt. pleasant and clayton roads in east san jose. they are thought to be the same men who were spotted earlier by a resident of nearby monrovia avenue. for about two hours, robert saunders elementary school here on rocky mountain way was locked down as precaution. a few blocks away, in what police call a 'surround and call-out' operation' at least 21 officers and a couple canine units surrounded a home on clayton road where the suspects and several other people were thought to be holed up inside and quite possibly armed with a gun thought to have been used in a robbery on thursday. >> it may have been a fire arm that was from yesterday's event. but they went to the backyard to retrieve it. it did not belong to a residence but this is speculation. they are probably going to go back

crews are trying to stop erosion on devil's slide. rob faldeboe is in the santa cruz mountains, where roads are blocked. haaziq madyun is vallejo -- where a major mudslide is causing problems. >> it was a muddy mess completely covering the north highway 29 and of vallejo. caltran it temporarily shut down the connector ramp off interstate 80 well workers used this bulldozer to remove the mud. while workers used that holdovers arbulldozer and these cranes for clock with the recent clock's saturated the sort of this hillside causing this month slide toward as we take a look you can see with the rainfall so to earth gave way of liquefying huge sections of this hill and flooding the off ramp- with mud. after several hours a welcome sign for motorists. these crews reopens the exit and i was the first driver to use the off-ramp once the work was completed. in vallejo haazig madyun kron 4. >>pam: residents and commuters impacted by a large mudslide near highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains will have to wait at least until tomorrow for even a temporary fix. kron 4's you can see how bad th

coverage continues now. haaziq madyun in the east bay - where rain soaked means more fallen trees. rob fladeboe is in the santa cruz mountains - crews there cleaning up a massive mudslide. but first - if you were commuting today - it was no picnic -especially on the golden gate bridge. maureen kelly has more from the north bay. check out the heavy fog that shrods the three car collision. the chp says just after 8am a southbound driver of a volkswagon gti.which sent that car across northbound lanes smashing into a honda civic. it's unclear at this time which driver involved in the initial collision crossed over into oncoming lanes. the collision sent debris across lanes in both the morning commute was massive. here you can see the gridlock on the northbound lanes.all of which was closed for nearly an hour. and while you can see some cars getting thru on the southbound side in this video those lanes were also completely closed several times in order to tow trucks access to the scene. cars stalled out.during the wait, which prolonged the congestion. the backup made many driversbites a
